Control Resonant, Remedy's new sequel, is a tough game, but it ships with a robust assist mode that lets players dial the challenge up or down at any time. From the pause menu, players can adjust damage dealt and received, widen dodge windows, or enable immortality and one-hit kills. There are also preset options for those who prefer traditional difficulty levels.
The Verge's Jay Peters used the feature extensively, toggling settings to get past frustrating boss fights and tedious open-world encounters. He found that small adjustments kept fights engaging without removing the challenge entirely, and that he could turn assist mode off once his character grew stronger. The game encourages trying without assist mode, but there is no penalty for switching it on, and no reload is required.
The launch-day inclusion is notable because the original Control received an assist mode only after a post-launch patch. By building the feature in from the start, Remedy gives players a way to manage the game's difficulty spikes and large, enemy-dense maps on their own terms. That flexibility may help more players reach the story beats and set-pieces that are the game's strongest draws.
