Google Photos is rolling out a new Redact tool that blurs sensitive information such as license plates, part of an upgraded Markup feature with new fonts and precise thickness sliders. The Markup updates are reaching all Android users worldwide, while the Wardrobe cataloging feature is expanding to additional users in the US, India, and Brazil.
For paying customers, Google is integrating Gemini Spark into Photos, letting AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US find and edit images with a single prompt. This ties new AI capabilities directly to premium subscription tiers, a clear monetization signal. Additionally, Android users get vintage-inspired Moods filters, and select countries on both platforms receive 15 new Remix templates that generate red-carpet and photo-booth style images.
These features illustrate Google's strategy of layering AI-powered convenience onto its consumer apps, encouraging both free-tier usage and upgrades to paid plans. The Redact tool addresses a practical privacy need, while subscriber-exclusive tools create a stronger reason to pay for Google AI services.
