MapQuest has added public transit directions to its mobile apps, a feature its rivals have offered for years. The company said the update is available now on iOS and Android, with web access planned.

The rollout covers roughly 2,000 cities in 70 countries, including door-to-door trip planning across buses, trains, trams, and walking, plus real-time departure and delay data for more than 350 cities. It also provides station entrance details and multiple route options.

The move comes after MapQuest said millions of people rediscovered the brand when it refused to follow Google Maps and Apple Maps in renaming Lake Ontario. The company said returning users, especially in major cities, wanted transit directions before making MapQuest their primary navigation app. Developers are also working on expanded coverage and Android Auto support.
