Netflix has released the trailer for Ray Gunn, the upcoming animated feature from Brad Bird, the director of The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. The film is a neo-noir science-fiction mystery set in an alternate future as seen from 1939, and it targets an older demographic than Bird's Pixar work.
According to the official premise, private eye Raymond Gunn, voiced by Sam Rockwell, is drawn into a case involving aliens, murder, and a multimedia star named Venus Nova, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Bird has described the film as a mashup of The Maltese Falcon and Buck Rogers, with more comedy and action than a typical film noir.
Bird has been developing the project for 30 years, with a script co-written by Matthew Robbins. The voice cast also includes Tom Waits, Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Alan Tudyk, Michael Chernus, and Patton Oswalt. Ray Gunn will premiere on Netflix on December 18, following a limited 70mm theatrical run in select theaters on December 4.
