OpenAI has hired three former Patreon executives, including co-founder Sam Yam, to anchor its creator-focused product strategy. Yam announced on X that he will lead Creator Product at OpenAI, bringing former Patreon product head Drew Rowny and engineering head Shannon Ma with him.
The move suggests OpenAI is exploring ways to enter the creator monetization business, an area where Patreon set the blueprint. Yam said the team will build with creators and share early access to new tools, and pointed to OpenAI DevDay on September 29. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also teased another announcement this week.
For Patreon, the departure is another setback. The company laid off 20 percent of its staff in January and recently announced a roadmap to overhaul user features. Losing a co-founder and technology chief adds to the turbulence.
