Snap has brought on Robert Downey Jr. as the face of its Specs AR glasses, naming him 'Chief Customer Experience Officer' and releasing videos where he demonstrates the device. The clips show the glasses helping with a putt, practicing art, and watching an MMA match in bed — and in one, Downey throws a box labeled 'AI glasses' into a trash bin, a direct swipe at Meta's smart glasses.
According to a Snap blog post, Downey will 'work alongside the SPECS team to explore how augmented reality can improve the way people live and work,' spanning entertainment, education, medicine, engineering, and manufacturing. Downey said he was 'absolutely sold on SPECS within 40 seconds' after testing other wearables over 20 years.
The glasses are set to launch this fall at $2,195 and are available for pre-order now. Snap has also enlisted musician Imogen Heap and NBA star Jimmy Butler to promote Specs, signaling a broader push to build buzz ahead of the release.
