The BT Tower, originally the Post Office Tower, was completed in 1964 to carry microwave antennas for the UK's national telecoms network. MCR Hotels has now submitted a planning application to Camden Council to redevelop the Grade II-listed landmark, more than two years after agreeing to buy it for £275 million.
The proposal includes a new public square, shops, restaurants, and a rooftop pool. But the developer's images show the pool on an adjoining rooftop, with swimmers looking up at the tower rather than down from it. MCR says the public would be able to use the pool.
Upper floors would be reopened to the public for the first time in decades. The application follows two rounds of consultation with more than 300 attendees. If Camden approves the plans, work is expected to begin in 2029 after BT vacates the site, with a public reopening targeted for 2033.
