VMware has quietly walked back its earlier push into SmartNICs, the programmable network adapters that promised to offload virtualization and networking tasks from server CPUs. The company had bet that hyperscale-inspired hardware would trickle down to ordinary enterprise data centers, but that enthusiasm did not translate into customer demand.

According to The Register, the retreat is not a full abandonment. The underlying technology may still live on in specific use cases, even as VMware refocuses its roadmap on software-defined features that require less specialized hardware. The move reflects a broader reality: many enterprises are not ready to adopt SmartNIC-based architectures at scale.

The Register notes that VMware's initial vision was to make SmartNICs a mainstream component of virtualized infrastructure, but the market response was lukewarm. While the company has not issued a formal statement, its product direction now suggests a more conservative approach, keeping the door open for future iterations if customer appetite changes.
