Nigeria has confirmed an imported Ebola case linked to the outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The patient, a woman who had recently traveled to Uganda, developed symptoms on Oct. 7, four days after arriving in Nigeria. She visited a private clinic in Abuja on Oct. 11, and her infection was confirmed this week, according to health officials.

The woman remains in isolation, and officials are reconstructing her contacts and travel history; 44 contacts are being monitored. Nigeria is the fifth country to report a related infection. Kenya has documented nine cases tied to an imported infection in recent weeks as the outbreak continues to grow.

The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola and is the second largest on record. The World Health Organization urged countries in the region to maintain a high level of readiness as the situation in the DRC evolves.
