Researchers have developed a concrete formulation that is both stronger than conventional concrete and able to absorb carbon dioxide from the air. The work, described in ScienceDaily, identifies a mix containing zeolite and bamboo biochar as the standout candidate.
In testing, the best formula boosted compressive strength by 7.48% and tensile strength by 15% compared with standard concrete. The combination appears to reinforce the material while giving it the ability to pull CO2 from the atmosphere.
Because concrete production is a major source of emissions, a version that captures carbon rather than only emitting it could be significant. The results suggest that natural zeolite and waste-derived bamboo biochar may be practical ingredients for more climate-friendly construction.
