Researchers at KAUST have found that exposing corals to controlled, low-level doses of dead pathogenic cells can help them fend off future infections. The work is part of broader efforts to protect reefs as rising sea temperatures and disease outbreaks put increasing pressure on coral communities.
In the study, corals that received this pretreatment showed stronger resistance to subsequent pathogen exposure than those that had not. The response resembles a vaccine-like priming of the coral's immune system, though the authors note it is not a vaccine in the conventional sense.
Because the study is reported in a single news release, independent verification and details about the experimental design are not yet available. Still, the findings point toward a possible intervention strategy for coral restoration projects facing accelerating environmental stress.
