A new proof of concept brings the idea of transmitting smell online a little closer to reality. According to one report, researchers have shown that a handful of smells can be converted into electronic signals and sent through the internet, much like audio or video data.

The technology is still early-stage: so far it works only with a small number of odors, not the vast range of smells that humans can perceive. That limitation matters because the real-world aroma space is enormous, and any useful "digital scent" system would need to handle far more than a few examples.

Even so, the demonstration suggests a possible path toward a new sensory layer for virtual environments. If the approach matures, future online worlds could carry not just images and sounds but also a whiff of what is happening on the other side of the screen. For now, the findings offer a proof of principle rather than a finished product.
