On 11 October 2026, a landslide and subsequent debris flow struck the Budhi Gandaki River in Nepal's Gorkha district. Seismic data indicates the landslide occurred near Chumchet at 04:22 local time, with a dam breach around 6 am that released the flow.
The flow caused substantial damage, including five probable fatalities and destruction of houses, roads, bridges, and a camp for the Budhi Gandaki hydropower project. Helicopter video shows a large dust cloud and possible air blast, suggesting a dynamic rock avalanche.
This event was smaller and slower than the 26 August Langtang Lirung disaster, and warnings appear to have been disseminated successfully. The incident raises concerns about the viability of the planned 225-metre-high dam, given the region's active landslide hazards.
