NASA has chosen a project called GIMLI to investigate a mysterious hole on the Moon known as the Marius Hill Pit. The goal is to find out whether the pit opens into a vast underground cave or lava tube. The mission will use a suite of instruments, including radar, seismic sensors, gravity measurements, and cameras, to look beneath the lunar surface.
By combining these techniques, researchers hope to map what lies below the pit and estimate the size of any hidden cavity. The findings could clarify how such lunar features form and whether they might offer sheltered sites for future exploration. The project is still in its early stages, with NASA having selected it for further study.
