A late monsoon burst has hit Nepal hard since Thursday, triggering 285 distinct landslides that have killed at least 15 people, with three more missing and three injured. The national hazard portal Bipad shows the failures spread across the country, but with a clear concentration in the central region. Ten of the events were fatal, and social media footage has captured dramatic slope movements, including a rotational landslide near Chame in Manang and failures from river undercutting in Galkot.
The same rainfall system also affected Sikkim in India, where the most serious event occurred at Rimbi in West Sikkim. There, 32 houses and four government accommodation blocks were rendered uninhabitable, and 107 people have been displaced.
