Researchers have identified a previously unknown frog species in the flooded forests of the western Amazon. The animal, named Adenomera varcena, was distinguished from its close relatives not by appearance but by genetic analysis and its distinctive call, which together set it apart as a separate species.

The finding highlights how much of the Amazon's biodiversity remains unrecorded, even in areas that have been studied. The authors note that such discoveries are increasingly urgent as habitat destruction and climate change continue to threaten the region's ecosystems, potentially erasing species before they are ever documented.
