Scientists at Oregon State University have patented a new method for separating zirconium and hafnium, two metals that are chemically similar but have distinct industrial uses. The process is water-based, which the researchers say makes it more environmentally friendly than conventional techniques. According to the university, the method achieves fivefold higher separation efficiency.

Zirconium and hafnium are critical in pure form for semiconductor manufacturing and atomic energy applications, where even small impurities can cause problems. The new approach could reduce reliance on harsh chemicals and hazardous waste in the separation process. The patent has been granted, though no information has been released about when the technology might be commercialized.
