A recent issue of the Citation Needed newsletter highlights three distinct regulatory developments in the crypto sector. Each action comes from a different institution or actor, but together they illustrate how oversight of digital assets is being reshaped from multiple angles.
The SEC has introduced what it calls “Reg Crypto,” a rulemaking effort aimed at creating exemptions for certain crypto activities. Meanwhile, the CFTC has invoked emergency authority to prevent state regulators from asserting control over prediction markets, effectively centralizing oversight at the federal level. In a separate move, a crypto firm associated with the Trump family has secured a bank charter, granting it a more traditional foothold in the financial system.
These events are not part of a single coordinated strategy, but they reflect a broader push by both regulators and industry players to define the rules of crypto. The SEC seeks to soften its own jurisdiction, the CFTC is asserting its own, and the bank charter allows a crypto entity to operate within conventional banking infrastructure. Whether these changes will bring clarity or further fragmentation remains to be seen.
