FunnyPlaying, a Chinese company best known for its Game Boy and Game Boy Advance upgrade kits, has announced the FPGB Mini. The new handheld plays original Nintendo cartridges and ROMs, but only for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color lines. That puts it in direct competition with Analogue's Pocket, though with a narrower library of supported games.

The FPGB Mini is notably smaller and cheaper than Analogue's Pocket, according to The Verge. That price and size advantage could appeal to retro gamers who primarily want a dedicated device for the original Game Boy era. However, the limited cartridge support means it won't serve as a one-stop device for fans of later handheld libraries.

For the retro handheld market, the FPGB Mini represents a lower-cost entry point from a company already established in the modding and upgrade space. While Analogue has built a reputation for premium, multi-system devices, FunnyPlaying's approach targets a more focused and budget-conscious segment of the same audience.
