Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme chips

Qualcomm introduced two flagship Android chips at its Snapdragon Summit: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both are 2nm processors and share modems, display support, security features, and memory/storage specifications. Reports agree that the Extreme variant is differentiated by a larger shared memory pool for AI, superior video capture (8K at 60fps and 4K at 240fps), and support for Qualcomm's Advanced Professional Video codec. Qualcomm says the Extreme chip can run a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model locally.

Sources differ on how much of a performance jump the Extreme model actually offers. The Verge notes the CPU specs are identical and calls the differences relatively minor, while Engadget highlights the extra memory and AI-boosted gaming features. Both chips are aimed at a similar market, and the common thread is AI: Qualcomm executives said AI agents will increasingly complete tasks for users rather than just execute commands, and the new sensing hub is designed to run small local models for personalization.

Motorola is the first announced adopter of the Extreme chip. Its Signature 27 includes a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto, a 50-megapixel Sony Lytia 910 main camera, Bang & Olufsen audio, and seven years of Android updates. Motorola has not yet given full specifications, pricing, or a specific release date, though reports expect a global launch before the end of 2026.
