The Center for AI Safety has released a Wage Loss Dashboard that converts AI-related layoffs into dollar figures. As of September data, it counts just over 117,000 U.S. job cuts tied to AI this year, representing an estimated $8.5 billion in lost annual wages. That works out to roughly $25 per person nationally.

State-level figures vary widely. California shows more than 27,000 AI-attributed layoffs and an estimated $56 per resident, while Alaska reports 138 cuts and $14 per resident. The dashboard combines monthly layoff announcements from Challenger, Gray & Christmas with state wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census population estimates.

CAIS cautions that these are estimates, not observed layoffs: state numbers are derived by applying the national share of AI-cited cuts to each state's announced job cuts. The data also excludes jobs created by AI, productivity gains, and re-employment effects. Because companies self-report whether AI played a role, the figures reflect a 'moderate standard' of AI-justified reductions rather than definitive replacements.
