The midrange Sony Xperia 10 VI, announced more than two years ago with Android 14 and a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset, will not receive Android 17. A notice on Sony's UK support site says a detailed technical assessment found that limitations related to the device's storage configuration mean it cannot support an Android 17 upgrade experience Sony considers adequate.

Sony apologized for the decision, acknowledging that it falls short of the three-OS-update promise made at launch. While major OS updates for the Xperia 10 VI are now ending, the company says it will continue providing security updates for four years, extending until June 2028.

Sony also claims the issue is specific to the Xperia 10 VI's technical specifications and does not affect promised updates for other Xperia models. The Verge notes, however, that since the technical requirements of future Android versions are not yet known, it is hard to take that assurance at face value given today's announcement.
